Precision Laser Cutting for Tube and Sheet
Alliance Metal Solutions operates advanced fibre laser cutting technology at our Somersby facility, delivering clean, accurate cuts across a broad range of structural steel profiles and sheet materials. Whether you need intricate cutouts for architectural panels or high-volume production of structural components, our laser cutting service handles both tube and flat sheet with equal precision.
Our tube laser is purpose-built to process Square Hollow Sections (SHS), Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS), Circular Hollow Sections (CHS), Universal Beams (UB), Universal Columns (UC) and Parallel Flange Channels (PFC). This capability eliminates multiple manual operations, cutting notches, holes, slots and mitred joints in a single pass. The result is faster assembly, tighter fit-up and a cleaner finished product.
For sheet work, we cut mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium across a range of thicknesses. Our nesting software maximises material usage, keeping costs down while reducing waste. Every part is programmed directly from your CAD files or supplied drawings, so dimensions are held consistently from the first piece to the last.
- Tight tolerances of ±0.1 mm on profiled cuts
- Complex geometries including notches, mitres, slots and holes in tube
- Fast turnaround with same-week delivery on standard orders
- Minimal material waste through intelligent nesting
- Processing of mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
- Capacity for SHS, RHS, CHS, UB, UC and PFC profiles
Our Laser Cutting Capabilities
The heart of our cutting department is a high-powered fibre laser paired with automated material handling. Fibre laser technology delivers a narrow kerf width and a smooth cut edge, which means less secondary finishing and faster downstream assembly. Parts come off the machine ready for bending, welding or surface treatment with minimal deburring required.
For tube and section processing, the laser rotates the workpiece through 360 degrees while cutting, enabling features that would traditionally require multiple saw cuts, drill operations and manual grinding. Complex node connections for architectural steelwork, furniture frames, balustrade posts and machinery guards can all be produced in a single automated cycle. This dramatically reduces labour time and ensures repeatability across large production runs.
Sheet cutting is equally capable. We handle thicknesses from thin-gauge stainless at 0.5 mm through to 20 mm mild steel plate, with sheet sizes up to 3000 mm × 1500 mm. Our programmers work with DXF, DWG, STEP and IGES files, and we are happy to assist with design-for-manufacture adjustments to optimise your parts for laser processing.
Quality control is integrated throughout. Every job is checked against the original drawing before dispatch, and we maintain full traceability with job-specific cut sheets and material certificates where required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What materials can you laser cut?
We laser cut mild steel, stainless steel (304, 316 and other grades) and aluminium. Sheet thicknesses range from 0.5 mm up to 20 mm depending on the material. For tube and section, we process standard Australian structural profiles including SHS, RHS, CHS, UB, UC and PFC in sizes commonly stocked by local steel merchants.
How accurate is laser cutting compared to plasma or saw cutting?
Fibre laser cutting holds tolerances of ±0.1 mm on profiled cuts, which is significantly tighter than plasma (±0.5–1.0 mm) or manual saw cutting. The narrow kerf and heat-affected zone also mean less distortion in thin materials, producing cleaner edges that often require no secondary finishing before welding or assembly.
What is the typical turnaround time for a laser cutting order?
Standard orders are typically completed within three to five business days from drawing approval. Urgent jobs can often be accommodated with same-day or next-day cutting depending on machine availability and material stock. Contact us with your requirements and we will confirm lead time at the quoting stage.
